How to: fit and adjust a bike helmet?

A bike helmet is a hard hat that you wear to protect your head in the event of a cycling accident. It is designed to minimize impacts to a cyclist’s head in collisions while limiting side effects such as disturbance of peripheral vision. The way to wear it seems simple, but it is completely different from wearing a normal helmet. So, how do you put on and adjust a bike helmet?

Measure up your bike helmet

The helmet’s size is also very important; you should select the closest one depending on the circumference of your skull in order to avoid having it too big or too small.

First things first. Get a fabric tape measure, a mirror, and a willing volunteer. Wrap the tape measure around the largest part of your head. It should graze the top of your eyebrows and your ears. Compare the measurement to the hat sizing chart below to find your corresponding size.

Adjust the fit pads or ring

Each bike helmet will have a different size. To ensure the correct way of wearing your bike helmet, it is recommended that you try on and adjust the ring on the back of your head.

With the ring comfortably adjusted you should be able to tilt your head fully forward, with the chin straps unbuckled, and the helmet shouldn’t move.

Adjust the helmet straps

To increase safety and comfort, you need to adjust the straps to fit your head. The following steps will show you how to properly adjust it.

STEP 1:

The helmet should sit level on your head, covering most of your forehead and stopping just an inch or so above your eyebrows. Now snap the chin strap together.

STEP 2:

Adjust both sides of the strap so that the buckle hangs just under the center of your lower jaw. Your helmet’s straps should sit flat against your head, with the strap dividers creating a “V” around your ears.

STEP 3:

Once the buckle is closed, the two loose strap ends can be be pulled to tighten them under your chin. Make sure there’s just enough room to fit one finger between the strap and your chin.

Bike helmet care guideChoose a genuine and high-quality helmet to protect yourself. These bike helmets will not be cheap, you need to take care of them so you can use them for a long time.

You should replace your bike helmet regularly. If you have a new helmet but you’ve fallen or crashed while wearing it, it’s time to replace it, no matter if you just got it. After practicing, you should clean the hat thoroughly and let it dry. The pads and straps should also be cleaned thoroughly.
